“One-Eyed Panther” Kitten Surviving on Hot Dogs in Mechanic Shop Proves He’s Unstoppable

When a desperate cry for help was heard from inside a wall at a mechanic shop, the mechanics jumped right into action.

After tearing down the wall and discovering a two-week-old kitten, the mechanics soon realized they were in way over their heads.

Keep reading to hear about how this tiny “one-eyed panther” with an appetite for hot dogs shocked everyone with his determination to beat the odds.

A Cry for Help

It was a seemingly average day at a body shop when mechanics heard a noise they were certain wasn’t car related.

They were little cries coming from inside the shop wall.

Having seen a mamma cat roaming around weeks before, the mechanics could guess what was making the noise.

It was a kitten’s cry for help. The mechanics didn’t hesitate to jump into action.

They began cutting open the wall right then and there.

“They cut open the wall and found a two-week-old kitten by himself,” said Bret Thompsett, a cat rescuer and rehabilitator in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Now that they had cut open the wall and rescued the helpless kitten, the mechanics had no idea what to do with him.

The kitten, later named Odin, had a few more surprises in store for his future rescuers.

Hot Rods & Hot Dogs

“The mechanics put Odin in a box and for two days, he would stay in this box,” said Bret.

The mechanics tried their best to care for Odin, but lacked the knowledge needed to care for a kitten so young.

They fed the kitten hot dogs not knowing he needed kitten formula or his mother’s milk!

“And because Odin is so hot headed, he ate those hot dogs at two weeks old,” said Bret.

Bret was baffled by the idea of a two-week-old kitten eat solid food. It was unheard of.

This was the first sign that Odin had a strong will to live.

He was determined to survive, even if it meant eating hot dogs.

Taking Charge

Wanting to do what was best for the kitten, the mechanics reached out to the community for help.

The community responded by urging the mechanics to take the baby kitten to the vet which was just a quarter mile away from where the body shop.

After growing concerned about the kitten’s health under the supervision of the mechanics, Bret and his girlfriend, Aimei, decided to take matters into their own hands.

The rescuer couple decided they couldn’t wait any longer.

They would take the tiny hot dog eating kitten to the vet themselves.

Tiny but Mighty

“We get this tiny little fluff ball in a box,” recalled Bret. “His right eye is completely shut and he has a huge abscess on the side of his face.”

Bret and Aimei took Odin down the street to the vet where he was seen immediately.

Sadly, it was too late to save Odin’s right eye.

There was nothing left in the socket, and would therefore be closed by the vet when Odin was a little older.

He was named Odin after the one-eyed god in ancient Norse mythology.

Much like the mighty Norse legend, this spunky kitten was strong and fierce.

The vet drained the abscess on Odin’s face and it was time for Odin to join Bret and Aimei in his new foster home, one that came complete with bottles of kitten formula and a warm place to rest.

Hey, I’m Odin

Odin arrived at the couple’s home ready for a fresh start.

No more hot dogs for this little trooper! They got Odin on track with bottle-fed kitten formula.

Bret and Aimei soon realized out that Odin was no typical baby kitten.

“From the get go at two weeks old, he was on top of things,” recalled Bret. “He’d walk up to other cats like ‘hey I’m Odin’”.

Odin’s confidence was that of an older cat, as was his taste in food.

“He wanted to eat wet food before he was supposed to. He wanted to do everything,” said Bret.

One-Eyed Panther

The couple would end up fostering Odin for almost six months, spending each day witnessing his ever-growing confidence and curiosity.

A few vet visits later, Odin was neutered and his empty eye socked was closed.

Odin made a rapid recovery from his surgeries. It seemed as if nothing could phase him.

“He was like a one-eyed panther,” recalled Bret.

Not only did Odin make great strides in his health, but he also made a few friends along the way!

He became a favorite among Bret and Aimei’s other feline residents.

Feeling as if time passed all too quickly, it was time for Bret and Aimei to find Odin a very special forever family.

Sweet Goodbyes

Between Bret’s experience as a foster and the connections he’d gained through working with Catopia Hawaii, Bret was able to find the perfect home for Odin.

“He’s such an amazing boy, we were really sad to see him go,” said Bret.

Odin had found an amazing home, with one dog and one cat sibling to keep him company.

Between Odin and his new siblings, there’s never a dull moment. This trio has a lifetime of adventures to look forward to.

Thanks to Bret and Aimei, Odin is safe and loved in a place he can call home.

Odin will never have to eat another hot dog again– though he may want to!

What a great story. He sounds like quite the guy. I am sure life has changed for his new people who will never be lacking in regaling people with stories of his antics. The mechanics tried help him even if they did keep him a bit too long.
