A heroic couple refused to give up when at first they couldn’t find a litter of 7-week-old puppies dumped along a gravel farm road.
It had been raining for days and the rescuers knew the puppies needed help.
Keep reading to discover how this couple’s determination saved six tiny puppies from a terrible fate.
An Unusual Call
Maggie Bradley, Founder and Animal Cruelty Investigator of Biscuit’s Legacy located in Harrisburg, Arkansas received a call that reported ten lab mix puppies had been dumped on a farm in Truman, Arkansas.
Maggie didn’t hesitate to jump into action.
“They wanted to know if we could help, and so we said, of course,” said Maggie.
Maggie went to the site right away, but couldn’t find the abandoned puppies.
She returned even more determined the next day, yet left empty handed.
However, Maggie wasn’t ready to give up. It had been storming for days and she knew the puppies needed to be found quickly.
The Search Party
Maggie needed to piece together the puzzle that she hoped would lead her to the puppys’ location.
On the third day of searching, she revisited the person who had found and reported the abandoned puppies.
“The person that had found them told us there were now only six because someone had pulled up and picked four out of the ten. We don’t know who it was– we don’t know where they went,” said Maggie.
The puppies were definitely still around. So, with newfound confidence, she continued her search for the six missing puppies.
“Here we are!”
It was now Saturday, Maggie’s fourth day of searching for the puppies. She asked her husband, Randy, if he would look for the puppies with her.
“I’m guessing Randy had no idea what he was in for,” said Maggie.
Maggie and Randy were driving down a gravel road between farm fields when suddenly, they were surprised with a puppy in the middle of the road!
“It was like what you see out of a movie, or a cartoon,” recalled Maggie.
“There was a puppy coming down the middle of the road!” Maggie laughed. “Ears were flapping in the breeze, and it looked like it was saying, ‘here we are!’”
The puppy was just as happy to see the couple as they were to see him. He ran right up to them if he knew they were there to save him!
“But that was the only puppy we could find, so there were six more that were still missing,” said Maggie.
Maggie and Randy were more determined than ever to find the remaining puppies.
They searched and waited with fingers crossed, hoping they’d be rewarded with a clue that would lead them rescue the others.
Hope at Last
Suddenly, Maggie and Randy heard puppies crying in the distance.
Following the sound, Maggie and Randy found themselves at a roadside ditch quickly filling up with water.
They could hear the puppies cry, but not a single puppy was in sight. They realized the sound could only be coming from once place: the storm drain.
“Apparently six puppies had found a little carved out hole down in the ditch. And they had gotten down into that and it started raining and the water started filling up. And they were trapped,” said Maggie.
One by one, Randy pulled the scared, wet puppies out from the storm drain.
Soon, the couple had six healthy puppies in their car, safe and sound!
They’d arrived at the scene just in time.
Happily Ever After
Maggie and Randy refused to give up searching for the puppies. They never lost hope.
“I couldn’t get them off of my mind. I had a feeling something bad was going to happen,” said Maggie.
Had Maggie and Randy not shown up when they did, the puppies would have drowned that day.
These puppies never have to worry about being dumped or harmed ever again.
“Remember, where’s there’s life, there’s joy,” said Maggie.
Thanks to the heroic couple, all six puppies were nursed back to health and adopted by loving families.
Biscuit’s legacy is an animal cruelty rescue ran by Maggie Bradley and a small team of volunteers and fosters in Arkansas, a state where the law has continually failed to address their high rate of animal cruelty cases.
